Should the Welsh Cup winner qualify as a result of finishing in the top ten places in the Welsh Premier League, the final club shall be the one that finishes 11th in the preceding Welsh Premier League season. Cardiff City, Swansea City, Total Network Solutions and Wrexham automatically qualify for the quarter final stage of the competition, but will be drawn away in the 2005/06 season as in the past two seasons

All the competing clubs have to comply with the entry requirements of the competition/league in which they normally compete. *

The competition will comprise of five rounds of knock out, one-legged matches to be played to a conclusion on that day/night, by extra time and penalties if necessary. The first round will consist of four matches with the eight teams being the second placed from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County (For season 2006/07 this will be Merthyr Tydfil), and the seven lowest placed from the Welsh Premier League. The second round will consist of four matches with the eight teams being the four winners from round 1, the top club from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County (For the season 2007/08 this will be Newport County) and the two Welsh Premier League clubs finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th and Welsh Cup winners. Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham and the League of Wales champions from the previous season will be seeded to the quarter final. The draw for rounds 1 and 2 will be open.
